Medical Records Administrator Degrees

When people think about careers in the medical field or health care services, they typically envision the health care practitioners themselves: doctors, nurses, technicians, and assistants that are responsible for one on one interaction with patients during diagnoses and treatment. However, the business of providing health care services to a community can be quite overwhelming, and that’s why hospitals and doctor’s offices utilize medical records administrators to keep track of all the accounts and paper work. Your medical record is similar to your foot print, and it is an important document for evaluating your health throughout your life. Your medical record is also used to determine how much you need to pay for services rendered. In order to be successful as a professional medical records administrator, you have to be able to communicate well with medical professionals, and you must have an eye for detail. Now that many hospitals and health clinics are switching to more efficient electronic medical records, you must also have an ability to work with different kinds of record keeping software. Most entry level medical records administration jobs only require an associate’s degree in health information technology, or related experience in a doctor’s office. Additional credentialing is also available from The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). A typical salary for a well trained medical records administrator is around $32,600.
