Medical Records Technician Degrees
When you visit a doctor’s office or a public health clinic, the physician or physician’s assistant will always be making notes about you and your condition in a file. Have you ever wondered what that file is used for, other than helping doctors and nurses keep track of their different patients? The truth is that a medical record is a very important piece of information about you, and you will continue adding to it for your entire life. Additionally, medical records technicians use the notations in your file to help determine what services have been provided and what you need to be charged for. In this climate of limited access to health care services, it is very important for these professionals to be accurate and efficient in their handling of the records so that patients are not over or undercharged. In most cases, you can achieve an entry level medical records technician position with an associate’s degree in health information technology. Those that go on to achieve their Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT) credential are usually preferred by larger and more prosperous employers, but this is not necessary to be employed. The health care industry is currently scrambling to find enough qualified individuals to help them keep up with their administrative duties, meaning that demand for medical records technicians is high. The average salary for a records technician falls around $30,660.
