  • Associate of Applied Science - Medical Assisting

    Description: Medical Assisting is an allied health profession whose practitioners function as members of the health care delivery team and perform administrative and clinical procedures. The Medical Assisting program is established upon the Standards and Guidelines for an Accredited Educational Program for the Medical Assistant as identified by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) which emphasizes a competency-based education in administrative, clinical, and transdisciplinary skills. Student competencies are validated through performance on written and practical exams, skills performance assessments, and a clinical internship. Graduates of the program will be prepared to assist physicians in examining and treating patients, performing laboratory testing, and managing the administrative and clinical responsibilities associated with efficient physician office operations.

  • Associate of Applied Science - Nursing

    Description: The associate of applied science in nursing program is designed to prepare individuals with the skills and knowledge to provide nursing care to clients, families and groups of clients throughout the lifespan in a variety of settings. It is a non-integrated nursing program. Graduates of this program are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN), which is required to practice as a Registered Nurse. The Associate of Applied Science degree program in Nursing will prepare students to assume entry-level positions as Registered Nurses. There is a tremendous market for RN's both locally and statewide. The North Carolina Center for Nursing states that the state is at the beginning of a nursing shortage that will rapidly grow more severe over the next 14 years. By 2020 the state is expected to need approximately 108,000 RN FTEs, while the supply of RN FTEs is expected to be only about 76,000 - approximately 70% of the expected demand. The Center bases its prognosis on the current aging of the nursing workforce, the general aging of the population, and the steady increase in the size of North Carolina's population.

  • Certificate - Surgical Technology

    Description: The Surgical Technology Program consists of coursework and a clinical experience to educate students in all aspects of surgical technology. The extensive practical training in this program will prepare graduates to assist in the care of the surgical patients in the operating room and to function as a member of the surgical team. Surgical technologists will apply theoretical knowledge to the care of patients, in addition to maintaining aseptic technique in the operating room. The Surgical Technology graduate will be able to obtain, prepare, and apply the learned skills to facilitate a surgical procedure. The graduate will be able to pass instruments and sterile items and equipment to the surgeon during a procedure, maintain a sterile field, and prepare instruments, supplies and equipment before and after an operation. The Surgical Technology Program graduate may be eligible for positions such as Second Assisting Technologist, Scrub Surgical Technologist or other related positions.
