A.S. - Health Information Management
Description: The Health Information Management Program is designed to introduce students to the diversity of health care. Students in this program will learn about privacy, confidentiality, electronic medical records, quality management, human resources, and coding and billing. Students will work in a variety of health care settings, hospitals, ambulatory care settings, insurance offices, attorney offices, and be able to perform coding, billing and medical record maintenance.
Students will receive training using advanced Virtual Lab technology and will be taught specialized courses like ICD-10-CM coding and hospital coding.
The program is consistent with Southwest Florida College's mission, as it will prepare graduates for employment in entry-level positions within the Health Information Management field.

A.S. - Health Information Management - Online

A.S. - Medical Assistant
Description: This program emphasizes medical theory and terminology as well as the practices and procedures associated with the operation of a healthcare facility. Students also participate in two clinical laboratory classes where they can apply the knowledge and training previously studied. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates can pursue entry-level employment as medical assistants with private physicians, health clinics, hospitals and nursing homes.

A.S. - Medical Lab Technician
Description: Medical Lab Technicians collect, examine, and analyze blood, urine, body fluids, cells and tissues of the human body. Results from these analyses assist physicians in the diagnosis, care, and treatment of the patient. Graduates of this program are trained in the use of a variety of equipment and the methodologies of hematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, immunoserology and immunohematology. Graduates must pass the MLT National Certification exam from the American Medical Technologists Association (AMT) and obtain licensure before seeking employment.
Coursework includes Anatomy and Physiology, Clinical Chemistry, Medical Terminology, Microbiology, Hematology, Immunohematology and Phlebotomy. All students will complete an externship prior to graduation.

Southwest Florida College is now enrolling for the NEW Associate of Science degree in nursing.
The Associate of Science degree in nursing program is a full time program that can be completed in two years. The program meets the requirements of the Florida Board of Nursing and focuses on the general education and beginning technical skills necessary for providing and managing patient care and participating in the professional career of nursing. Upon Graduation the student is eligible to take the National Council Licensing Exam (NCLEX-RN) to become a registered nurse and find employment in entry-level positions in the nursing field. Students also acquire training in critical care or perioperative nursing which are skills that local employers seek.
A selective admissions process is in place for this program. Please inquire with an Admissions representative for more details as to criteria for students seeking to enroll into the nursing program.

A.S. - Surgical Technician
Description: The Surgical Technician program is designed to provide students with an academic and clinical background in the field of surgical technology. The program prepares students for entry-level positions in a number of health care facilities including hospitals, medical centers, and public and private surgical centers. This program contains a mandatory 12 credit non-paid surgical technician externship that must be completed prior to graduation.
