  • Community Mental Health & Addictions Worker

    Description: Community Mental Health & Addictions Worker Diploma - Community Mental Health & Addictions Workers assist individuals with mental health challenges, housing and addiction issues by encouraging and supporting them in their daily lives. They model, teach and support all functions of home life, daily living activities, leisure and recreation for improved quality of life for their clients. They provide assistance, support and skill training to adult men and women to establish and maintain a stable living situation, as independently as possible. They discuss, isolate and assess problems, develop a flexible plan of action, ensure basic needs are met, network clientele with needed services and provide crisis intervention as necessary. They also act as coordinators for volunteers. The unique curriculum for this program has been prepared in direct partnership with industry agencies supporting individuals with mental health challenges and addictions. Based on the input received from these industry partners, this program has been specifically designed to prepare students philosophically, mentally/intellectually, emotionally, and experientially for a successful career with longevity and the potential for advancement in the challenging field of mental health and addictions.

  • Health Care Assistant (formerly Resident Care Attendant)

    Description: Do you have a caring and compassionate attitude? A sense of professionalism and great patience? To meet the needs of our aging population, Health Regions across BC are opening thousands of new residential and assisted living units; the staffing needs for Resident Care Attendants/Health Care Assistants have never been greater. This is an excellent time to consider training for employment in this rewarding field as opportunities abound! While most graduates provide care for seniors, our in-class program prepares you to care for adults with a wide variety of chronic health conditions including dementia. You will work with people who will depend on you for daily care, support, encouragement, mobility and more and you will need to be able to build a trusting relationship with your patients and their families. You may also be involved with palliative care, which emphasizes easing a person's pain, enhancing their quality of life, and supporting their family. You will work as part of a team working with doctors, nurses and other health care professionals. Good communication skills are essential and Stenberg College includes communication training in the program. With small classes and practicum included, our graduates enter the workforce fully prepared to assist their patients live as full a life as possible.

  • Practical Nursing

    Description: If you are ready to take on an important role in hospitals and other health care facilities, the Practical Nursing program at Stenberg College will prepare you for it. This is a great career choice if you love working with other people and want to make a contribution to the province's nursing shortage.

    Stenberg College's Practical Nurse training will teach you how to work under the direction of registered nurses and doctors, providing direct patient care. You will be shown how to monitor patients and update progress reports. You will be able to deliver medications and assist with patient rehabilitation.

    Stenberg College will show you how to help patients with personal care and daily activities. You will even develop the ability to apply and change dressings and transport patients between various departments. You will promote health and healing for people of all ages in any health care setting. This includes hospitals, long term care facilities, and mental health centres.

If so, consider enrolling in the Resident Care Attendant program at Stenberg College. You will learn how to offer support to elderly individuals. You will help them maintain a level of independence while easing their pain and improving their quality of life.

    Stenberg College will show you how to assist with personal care and mobility. You will be able to observe and record their progress, as well as any problems. You will possess strong knowledge of the aging process and common ailments, such as dementia and be well-equipped to handle any situation. The program also provides you with first aid and food safe certification.
