Medical Technician Programs at University Canada West Academies

  • Community Health Care

    Description: The Community Health Care diploma program is an intensive program designed to prepare you for a rewarding career in care-giving. You will learn residential care for clients living with chronic conditions or mental health issues. You will also study behavior management, non-violent crisis intervention techniques, developmental disorders and basic special education principles. Recreational therapy and activity program planning will also be covered.

    As a Community Health Care student, you will also be trained in Standard First Aid and CPR. WHMIS and BC FoodSafe training is also provided. Seven weeks of practicum will allow you to combine theory and practice. You will gain hands-on experience in a three-week practicum in the community and a four-week practicum in a long-term care facility.

    As a graduate of the CHC program, you will be prepared to function collaboratively as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team. Career opportunities include Long-Term Care Aide, Home Support Health Care worker, Resident Care Attendant, Nurse's Aide and Special Needs Assistant.

  • Dental Office Administrator

    Description: Because they are usually the first faces patients see at the dentist's office, Dental Office Administrators are key members of the dental health team. As such, they must be knowledgeable, organized and client focused.     In the Dental Office Administrator program, you will study dental terminology and pharmacology. You will also learn to prepare dental tests and to respond to questions about various dental conditions as well as prescriptions.     In the Health Care Assistant program, you will learn to assist people, especially older adults, who require physical care and support. The program focuses on the development of crucial personal and occupational qualities attendants need to care for residents of long-term care facilities. You will learn to identify and respond to the physical and emotional day-to-day needs of your clients. You will also receive practical, hands-on training in physical and mental activities and learn to observe and communicate with residents. You will also learn to operate and care for of specialized equipment.

    After successfully completing the Residential Care Attendant program, you will be qualified to work in long-term care facilities, home health care agencies, retirement homes/residences, hospices and group homes.

  • Medical Office Assistant

    Description: Medical Office Assistants are integral team members in any health care facility. Doctors and nurses depend on MOAs to be organized and versatile, especially in the busy medical offices or clinics.

    If you are considering a career in the health care industry, the Medical Office Assistant program at CDI College will provide you with the comprehensive knowledge and hands-on training for success in this fast-paced career. You will develop a comprehensive knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology. You will also receive hands-on training in the MS Word, Excel and Access as well as medical machine transcription and standard medical office practices. In addition to medical training, you will be fully trained in interpersonal skills, organizational effectiveness, and communication skills necessary to function in a medical environment.

    As a graduate of the Medical Office Assistant program, you will be qualified for entry-level work as a medical office assistant, medical receptionist, appointment scheduler or a medical records clerk in a variety of health care settings. You may also find work in physicians' offices, medical centers, clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, ambulatory care centers, and medical billing offices.

  • Practical Nursing

    Description: Practical Nurses work in concert with fellow health care specialists in settings like acute care wards, private homes, public schools and long-term care facilities. The Practical Nursing Diploma program at the Academy of Health trains students to work in medical, surgical and rehabilitation care in a variety of positions.

    The 51-week intensive training program introduces students to the fundamental duties and responsibilities of a Practical Nurse. The curriculum follows standards laid out by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of British Columbia. Students are trained in both holistic and clinical practices, with a focus on the Nursing Arts. Courses combine classroom learning and lab work, as well as three practicum placements. During this supervised hands-on training, students gain experience in facilities dealing with acute care, gerontology and community medical care.

    At the end of the supervised learning, students participate in a preceptorship and job search training, to help transition them from student to graduate.
