Medical Technician Programs at Vancouver Career College

  • Community Health Care

    Description: A career in caregiving is the perfect way to make a difference in your community and the lives of those who need specialized aide. The Community Health Care Worker program at Vancouver Career College provides training and hands-on experience for work in settings like schools, community centres and care facilities. This 43-week intensive program prepares students for care positions in residencies, special needs facilities and more. Vancouver Career College's highly trained instructors teach the skills needed to work with developmental disorders, special needs patients, behavioural disabilities, mental health disorders and geriatric patients. In addition, students learn how to plan recreational activities and programs, and run rehabilitation programs using art and music therapy. During the program, students gain experience in their field through three practica. Students spend three weeks in a non-clinical care facility, such as a school or community centre; three weeks in an intermediate care facility; and four weeks in an extended care facility. Graduates receive the following certifications: Community Health Care Worker Diploma; Long Term Geriatric Care Aid Certificate; Resident Care Attendant Diploma; Alzheimer's Certificate; Mental Health Community Care Certificate; Basics of Medications Certificate; Standard First Aid Certificate; CPR "C" Certificate; Food Safe Level 1 Certificate and a WHMIS Certificate. At the end of this program, you will be fully prepared to enter the personally and professionally rewarding field of Community Health Care.

  • Health Care Assistant

    Description: The 27-week Health Care Assistant program provides the specialized training needed to work as an intermediate or extended caregiver working with elderly or disabled patients.

    The program teaches students the fundamental medical knowledge they will need to succeed in this industry, including medical terminology, physiology, chronic conditions. Students learn to monitor patient health, keep patient records, and create a support network for a special needs patient and his or her family.

    Students in this program complete two clinical care supervised practicum placements in order to put their skills into practice. Graduates receive several certifications in addition to the Health Care Assistant Diploma including Long-Term Geriatric Care Aid, Certificate Food Safe Level 1 Certificate, Alzheimer's Certificate, CPR "C" Certificate Standard First Aid Certificate and WHMIS Certificate.

  • Medical Office Assistant

    Description: Work in the heart of the fast-paced health care industry as a Medical Office Assistant with Vancouver Career College's diploma program. During this 32-week diploma program students will learn all aspects of running a medical office from administrative to technical skills. Students learn the latest medical office best practices such as bookkeeping, computer skills, organizing medical records, transcribing medical information, operating specialized billing software, and preparing and administering basic medical tests. Other core curriculum focuses on human anatomy and diseases, medical terminologies, pharmacology, and clinical procedures. Medical Office Assistants are fully trained to answer basic patient questions about their conditions and medication. Supporting courses will help you develop interpersonal and customer relations skills and focus on career development and the job search. Students will also gain real world experience with a five-week practicum at the end of the program. Upon graduation, you will receive a Medical Office Assistant Diploma, a Standard First Aid Certificate and a CPR "C" Certificate. Graduates are trained to work in the following positions: Admitting Clerk, Emergency Room Admitting Clerk, Medical Secretary, Medical Transcriptionist, Medical Receptionist, Medical Billing Clerk or Medical Office Assistant.

  • Medical Records Clerk

    Description: The health care industry has volumes of medical records to store, maintain and protect and is in need of trained professionals. A medical records career balances medical knowledge and organizational and administrative skills. The Medical Records Clerk diploma program at Vancouver Career College will provide you with the academic and practical training you need to become a guardian of personal medical records. This 33-week diploma program trains students to oversee medical records in locations such as health ministries, insurance companies, hospitals and research centers. In addition to learning disease classifications and medical terminology, students learn the protocols for handling personal medical records. They learn how to collect, file, process, monitor and protect health information. Additional courses examine confidentiality and review federal privacy legislation, which determines the guidelines of releasing personal information. Computer skills, office and front desk practices, and creating a sustainable workplace are other course topics. At the end of the program, you will participate in a 125-hour practicum in your field of study. This hands-on experience will prepare you for a career as a medical records clerk or medical receptionist, among other jobs.

  • Pharmacy Assistant

    Description: Patients depend on their pharmacist to dispense prescriptions and provide vital health information. As a Pharmacy Assistant, you will assist the pharmacist with this important task and become an integral part of the health care industry. Vancouver Career College's Pharmacy Assistant Technician diploma program will give you the tools you need to enter this highly regarded role. This 31-week program trains students to work in both community and hospital pharmacies. Courses covered include pharmacology, dispensing techniques, pharmacy math, medical terminology and prescription transcription. Students also learn the administrative and clerical responsibilities of a Pharmacy Assistant Technician, such as billing. CPR and First Aid training and certification are also incorporated into the program. The program culminates in a supervised work placement, where you will gain hands-on experience in a pharmacy setting. Following this placement, you will receive job search training and support so you can start your career. According to a Canadian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy study: "86 per cent of all graduates of Pharmacy Assistant Technician programs found work in their field."

  • Practical Nursing Generic

    Description: Practical Nurses work in concert with fellow health care specialists in settings like acute care wards, private homes, public schools and long-term care facilities. Vancouver Career College's Practical Nursing Generic Diploma program trains students to work in medical, surgical and rehabilitation care in a variety of positions. The program introduces students to the fundamental duties and responsibilities of a Practical Nurse. The curriculum follows standards laid out by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of British Columbia. Students are trained in both holistic and clinical practices, with a focus on the Nursing Arts. Courses combine both classroom learning and lab work, as well as three practica. During this supervised hands-on training, students gain experience in facilities dealing with acute care, gerantology and community medical care. At the end of the supervised learning, students participate in a preceptorship and job search training, to help transition them from student to graduate.

This program meets the competencies listed by the College of Massage Therapists of BC (CTMBC) Occupational Competency Profile.
