Cytogenetic Technologist Career & Jobs: Training, Salary & Certification Requirements

Although the amount of information that scientists and doctors now have about the human body and how it operates is immense compared to what we’ve had access to in the last couple of centuries, there is still much that we don’t understand about the way that humans are formed and what decides whether or not children are born with birth defects, how diseases develop in the body and why people have trouble conceiving children. Cytogenetic technicians are responsible for preparing the biological specimens for examination and are often tasked with readying microscope slides, analyzing the resulting computer images, culturing and harvesting procedures, and photomicroscopy.

Work Environment

It is most common for cytogenetic technicians to work in a laboratory setting, and these labs can be located in research hospitals, universities and colleges, private companies or health clinics. Because cytogenetic technicians are required to perform very delicate tasks that require patience and accuracy, they are often sitting and required to use a selection of sophisticated pieces of examinations equipment throughout the day.

High School Preparation

It is important that students who have an interest in a future career being a cytogenetic technician prepare themselves with a strong background in science and human anatomy. Courses that are relevant include chemistry, physics, biology, algebra, geometry, and physical science. It is also important for high school students to have strong reading and writing skills, and a foundation in the health occupations/medical professions.

Requirements

Before selecting a program at a college or university, it is important that future cytogenetic technicians research the various requirements that different employing agencies might have for the technicians that they hire. At some companies, different course work or laboratory experience might be required. In most cases, it is required that candidates have a bachelor’s degree in cytogenetic technology or cytogenetics from an accredited college or university. Following graduation, it is essential for all students to be certified by Board of Registry of the American Society for Clinical Pathology or the National Credentialing Agency.
