Electrocardiograph Technician Career & Jobs: Training, Salary & Certification Requirements

Hospitals and doctors depend on the accuracy of their monitoring equipment to determine the vital signs of patients in emergency situations and to monitor their recovery after surgery and other procedures. Any time people undergo a major operation, they are connected to equipment that will record and monitor the activity of their heart. Although nurses and doctors are familiar with these pieces of equipment, it is the responsibility of the electrocardiograph technician to make sure they are connected and operating properly. This can mean that they must prepare the electrodes that will be connected to the patient and make sure the patient understands what the machines are monitoring. Electrocardiograph technicians are responsible for remaining calm and carrying out doctors orders in emergency situations, and have a heart for helping people.

Work Environment

Electrocardiograph, or EKG technicians, are typically employed in hospitals or private cardiologist practices, and spend most of their time working under the direct supervision of cardiologists. In some cases, the EKG technicians might be asked to train less experienced technicians during the course of their normal day. The work might be stressful at times, as you may be called upon to assist in emergency situations.

High School Preparation

It is important for young students that are interested in becoming a professional EKG technician to concentrate on math and science courses while they are in high school. Subjects that should be mastered include biology, algebra, physical education, computer skills, and emergency medical technology.

Requirements

There are several routes that individuals can take when pursuing a job as a professional EKG technician. Most commonly, after high school graduation, individuals will pursue a two year associates degree or certification at a community college or junior college. Others will enter the field right out of high school by securing an apprenticeship or on the job training with an experienced EKG technician. Many employers prefer to hire individuals with some health related experience that have graduated from an accredited program.

Career Outlook

It is expected that the demand for electrocardiograph technicians will increase faster than the national average for most health related occupations. In the next few years, experts predict that the industry will see a twenty to thirty-five percent increase in the number of positions that are available for electrocardiograph technicians. As the elderly population is increasing and living longer, there is a need for professionals that are qualified to assist with heart related problems and treatments. EKG technicians that choose echocardiography, Holter monitoring or vascular technology as their specialties will be in even more demand.
