Medical Technician, Lab Tech & Training Jobs

Healthcare is the largest industry in the United States. According to the Department of Labor’s somewhat dated statistics, in 2006 care provided 14 million jobs—13.6 million jobs for wage and salary workers and about 438,000 jobs for the self-employed.

Seven of the twenty fastest growing occupations are health care related. Most workers have jobs that require less than 4 years of college education, although many of those professionals – such as nurses - are in the process of upgrading their educational credentials via online education.

All of these medical technician positions were expected to grow faster than average in 2006, a year that precedes the debate now taking place in the Congress over expanded healthcare programs. The extension of health insurance to an additional thirty million Americans should turbo-charge the healthcare economic machine, but whether or not new healthcare funding and facilities materialize the medical technician field will remain an excellent career choice.

Perhaps choices is a better word, because medical technicians work in a variety of medical specialties. The principal career options are outlined below, but the speed with which medical technology is moving suggests that additional specializations will materialize in the next decade. At the moment skilled medical technicians are entering the field on the strength of a two year degree. It’s a lot of opportunity for the time and money you’ll be investing.
