Social Worker Career & Jobs: Training, Salary & Certification Requirements

When individuals or families run into difficult situations in which they are having trouble providing food, shelter or health care for themselves, it sometimes becomes necessary for these individuals to see the assistance of the local, state or federal government. IN most cases, these people are allowed to enroll in government programs that will provide them with increased access to food and healthcare or help paying their rent or utility bills. In other cases, it becomes necessary for a social worker to be assigned to the case in order to make sure that court orders are followed and children are protected as they should be. It is the responsibility of the social worker to interview clients of all ages and backgrounds to determine the most accurate information about their physical and emotional well being. In some cases social workers are appointed to administrative or director’s positions in certain agencies or organizations.

Work Environment

Although a social worker might be employed by a local, state or federal government, they are often required to work on their own, and spend much of their time out in the field, visiting with the clients that have been assigned to them. Social workers are sometimes included in comprehensive community health teams at schools, correctional facilities and rehabilitation centers.

High School Preparation

Those who think that they would enjoy a career as a social worker should spend their high school career increasing their knowledge of counseling, psychology, and social issues. Volunteer work or internships are always useful as well.

Requirements

In order to gain entry into the professional social work industry, it is necessary for a student to achieve the bachelor’s degree in social work. In order to achieve administrative positions, it is necessary to complete post graduate work and achieve the title of licensed social worker.

Career Outlook

As the elderly population in this country continues to expand it is necessary for more social workers to be put to work providing them with the monitoring and care that they need. It is increasingly become the job of the social worker to deal with disadvantaged youth, abused women and children and those that suffer from mental illnesses. As more money is available from federal funds to offer services for these people, more social workers will be needed to create efficient programs and processes.
